E-mail your MP: Keep the Gun Registry

The Conservative government has tabled legislation that will end the National long-gun registry. The registry was created as part of a response to public pressure, particularly through women, to strengthen gun control legislation following the tragic events at the École Polytechnique, December 6, 1989.

There has been a substantial decline in the number of homicides, domestic violence incidents and suicides using rifles and shotguns since the registry was implemented. Law enforcement associations use the registry daily to help them prevent, investigate and solve crimes. The registry protects the safety of first responders and other front-line workers as it allows them to determine when a gun is in a home and plan accordingly.

The gun registry helps save lives. Now you can help save the gun registry.  Take Action to Protect Workplace and Public Safety! Use this tool to send an e-mail to your Member of Parliament.

The gun registry is an important tool in protecting public safety. Law enforcement professionals access the registry over 17,000 times a day and police officers, social workers and other front-line first responders say they rely on the registry's information to keep safe on the job.

Since the registry came into effect we have seen a drop in suicides and domestic violence using long guns.

The registry has helped save lives.

I am concerned that Bill C-19 proposes to not only end the registry, but to destroy the data that has already been collected, thus preventing provincial and territorial governments from continuing to use the information. This seems like a terrible waste of an investment that taxpayers have already made.

Instead of scrapping such a valuable tool for public safety, the Canadian government should maintain and improve the registry to help keep our workplaces and communities safe.

Sincerely,
